Welcome to Michael's Online Astronomy Journal.
Hello everyone. I think this page is a wonderful idea. It allows us to post successes and failures so that others can learn. I hope to be an active participant.
My father introduced me to astronomy about 30 years ago and I still have that little 60mm refractor. I took a 25 year break (with intermittent relapses) and have returned to an old interest. I like building or repairing things (astronomy and otherwise). I am inquisitive about most things and love to read and collect books.
I am a geomatician (newest name for land surveyor) with the Cayman Islands Government.
Hobbies are ham radio, astronomy, woodworking, model engineering, auto mechanics and gardening (mainly fruits instead of flowers). All of this keeps me very busy so very little idle time. And I love it.
Favorite Sky Object
The Moon. It can be seen with the naked eye and in great detail with any binoculars or telescope. Many areas have a different look when at the terminator or fully illuminated. And it also gives us one of the greatest views imagineable - a solar eclipse.
Experience: 10+ Years
Astrophotography: Yes, I do take pictures through my telescope
Where I live
Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, BWI,
Comments about where I live
I am located in the Cayman Islands and we have wonderful locations for observing the skies. No dew most nights (except for the last couple hours before dawn) nor freezing temperatures. Close enough to the equator to get the northern sky and more of the south than in the US. Skies are not really dark but not as bright as in most countries (estimate mag 6 most nights). I can view most items from my backyard. Other parts of the island (especially the eastern end) have no light pollution at all and are only 1/2 hour away.
