Tonight was completely cloudy, but I thought I'd do some more mods on my scope.
It's been a few months since I added the fan kit and the rings to hold the NexStar 102mm Refractor. See my entry on Killer Scope Mods
Here are some older Mods that I did that I never journaled:
3 Wheel Dolly
simple 24" round dolly with pivoting wheels. I used a special tool for
boring out 1 inch depressions for the scope feet. In this picture, the
scope is on the dolly.
Total cost: $22.00 ($6 for each wheel and $4 for the 24" round particle board)
dew shield works great though I mostly use it for contrast and keeping
ambient light out of the OTA and off of the secondary. i have never had
my secondary dew up, but I sure have lost contrast because of some near
by light hitting the secondary mirror.
Total Cost: $7.00 ($5 for the sturdy yet flexible plastic and $2 for the self-adhesive velcro)
Today I added a few more things:
a bit of a pain to use the edge of the scope to slew around or fine
tune an object in the eyeiece when the dew shield is on. I've been
wanting to add a small knob for some time now. Since I am getting more
comfortable drilling holes in my scope, now was the time.
I found one that was off-white like my scope and it practically looks like it came that way. Cool.
Total Cost: $2.00
Tension Altitude Springs
my scope has gained so much more weight with all of the things I've
been adding to it. The tension springs were too tight causing backlash
on altitude adjustments. I added an additional keyring link between the
spring and the pull ring and only put the pull ring on the bolt. This
dramatically reduced the friction and made so my altitude ajustment is
extremely smooth with no backlash.
Tripod Head For Camera and Coronado PST (Personal Solar Scope - H Alpha)
I wanted to be able to piggyback my camera on the scope and
the Coronado just so happens to come with a tripod screw hole so this
addition works for both items. Seen in the picture is the Coronado PST
on the tripod head. The Coronado in the picture is a loaner, but I am currently saving for one and hope to have it this summmer.
Total Cost: $7.00
So here is a current picture of my scope setup (minus the Equatorial Platform) as of tonight.
